I. Show very big files regardless of contents

K-free can show files of any size quickly and without causing problems. Files of 200 Mbytes will be displayed as quickly as files of 200 bytes.

Ctrl+End will position to the end of the file quickly and Ctrl+Home back to the start.
You can use the scroll bar to reposition to any part of the file and Page Up/Page Down will move up and down the file reading text from the disk when it is needed.

All this will happen automatically without any action being taken by the user. The result will appear the same as when a file is read in any other application, Notepad for example.
However please be warned, whilst K-free can be used without problems to read files of several hundred Mbytes, opening such a file with another application will often crash windows. If you want to try this please save all your work in all applications first.

K-free will show text contents of any file.
If the file is not a plain text or html/rtf file it will often contain non-printable characters. These will usually be shown as | or a square depending on the font used to display text.

II. Finding and Copying text

Use Find and Clip from the edit menu.

Use Find from Edit menu to find a string within the file displayed.
If found, the string will be shown selected. The F3 key will find the next string in the text.
At the end of the file you can loop back to the start of the file and re-start the search automatically.

Text will be found even if the file shown is very large. In this case K-free will read the file from disk and you can press the Esc key to stop the search.
See Edit/Find

Use Clip from the Edit menu to Copy selected text.
You can then use Paste in the menus of many applications to insert the copied text.
ALTERNATIVE Shift+Insert will usually work wherever you are typing text.

Text can be selected by holding the shift key down whilst you move the cursor (using up/down/left/right/PgUp/PgDn/Ctrl+End/Ctrl+Home).
Text can also be selected using the mouse by holding the left mouse button down and dragging the mouse on the text. If you drag the mouse beyond the start or end of the text currently displayed, text will be scrolled as well as added to the selection.

All text selected will be copied to the clipboard. If the file is very large, it is possible you selected many megabytes of data. In this case the file will be read to copy the text and progress will be shown on the status bar if option "Show Progress .." is checked on the Windows/Status Bar menu. You can press Esc to stop reading a large file.
WARNING. If you read more than 2 or 3 Mbytes, many applications will malfunction (or Windows will crash) when you try to paste the text. K-free can be used without problems to read files of several hundred Mbytes however opening such a file with Wordpad for example will crash windows.

NB Find and Clip always apply to the window with the focus (title bar is blue/highlighted). This can be either the pop up text window or a file list window. To change the window, select a window on the Windows menu.
If a file list window has the focus, Find and Clip apply to the Current Section. To Find or Clip text first change section to Text.
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
