Options: Make File List
A. Dirs/Files to List options
B. Refresh behaviour - Sort after refresh / double click directory tree.
C. Refresh at startup
D. Directory Tree - Case
E. File List Format when Refresh - Case / dirs at top / renumber
F. Other Sort Options - Renumber After Sort / Sort after interrupt
A. Dirs/Files to List options
Options "Multiple Directory ..." and "Include Subdirs" are part of the selections that are used when the file list is refreshed.
A separate value for these options is kept for each file list window.
They can be changed:
- Using Quick Options selection on the Edit menu
- In Options: Make File List
- On the Select menu ("Multiple Directory ..." only)
- From the Enter Find Criteria screen for Find Files Containing Text
- Using Select Dirs & Files to list from the Select menu
- Using the keys defined [Usually Ctrl+M, Ctrl+S respectively]
- Using the keys defined to change the option AND refresh the file List [Usually M, S respectively. These keys will be available only if you have initialised the keys and selected the option for extra Keys. See Initialise Keys / Include Extra Single Keys for K-free]
See also Select Dirs Files to list on the Select menu.
B. Refresh behaviour - Sort after refresh / double click directory tree.
Sort after refresh:
After the file list is completed it will usually be sorted if one of the Sort By items is checked on the View menu.
No sort will be done if "Skip sort after refresh ..." is checked on Options: Make File List.
No sort will be done if "No Sort" is checked on the View menu.
Double click directory tree:
If Option "Refresh FileList when double-click" is checked, the filelist will be refreshed whenever a directory in the directory tree is double-clicked. The double-click key (Z) can also be used. NB This option is only available for a single directory list (when "Multiple Dir Selection" is UNchecked).
C. Refresh at startup
This option determines whether refresh will be done on any file list windows that are loaded when K-free is started.
The same set of windows as were used the last time K-free was run will always be loaded.
If windows are loaded without a file list being made, selections and options can be changed before the first refresh is done on each window.
D. Directory Tree - Case
If Option "Tree - Directory names in lower case" is checked, all entries in the directory tree will be converted to lower case (small letters).
E. File List Format when Refresh - Case / dirs at top / renumber
These Options can be used to change the data put in the file list when refresh is done:
- Option "FileList - File path & name in Lower case" will cause all entries in columns FileName, FilePath and Type to be converted to lower case (small letters).
- Option "FileList - Dirs at top when refresh" will cause all directories listed to be placed at the top of the list.
NB If the file list is sorted, directories may no longer be at the top. If the first sort column is FileName or Type or Size then directories will always be together at the top or bottom of the list.
- Option "Renumber after refresh" will cause the Sequence Number (No.) column to be set to 1,2,3. If no renumber is done, the No. column may not be the same as the order in the list (if the list was sorted or directories were placed at the top).
F. Other Sort Options - Renumber After Sort / Sort after interrupt
These options concern the Sort order for the file list specified using Sort By items on the View Menu.
- If Option "Renumber after sort" is checked. the Sequence Number (No.) column will be set to 1,2,3 when file list is sorted. If no renumber is done, the No. column will retain it's original value.
- If a refresh is stopped, the file list will not be sorted. If option "Prompt to do sort ..." is checked then a message will allow the user to choose whether to sort or not.

Options: Keys / Mouse
A. Standard Keys
B. Reposition Listbox
C. Misc
D. Initialise Keys / Include Extra Single Keys for K-free
A. Standard Keys
Some Keys are defined as standard keys in K-free.
These include:
F/I/D - change Font/Increase fontsize/Decrease fontsize
Q - Right click
In general Standard keys work with any combination of Alt+Shift+Ctrl
It is possible to specify one of the Alt/Ctrl/Shift keys which will not work with any standard key.
Usually this is Alt since Alt+letter is used to show a menu or action the control on a screen which is assigned to that letter.
E.g. Alt+F should show the File menu.
B. Reposition Listbox
In K-free, it is always possible to reposition a listbox using Shift+letter key.
In Windows, it is usually possible to reposition a listbox using just the letter key. This is not desirable in K-free since most letter keys have other functions.
Check the option "Reposition ListBox only ..." to disable the standard repositioning in lists but still allow repositioning using Shift+letter key.
THIS IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
For Advanced Users Only:
If the option "Reposition ListBox only ..." is UNchecked, standard repositioning of listboxes will occur but sometimes in combination with other functions of the screen. This is confusing and recommended only for advanced users.
It is a standard feature of all Windows applications that when you press any letter key on a list, the list will be repositioned to the next item starting with that letter.
The feature is usually disabled in K-free to allow letter keys to be used for other functions.
On the main K-free file list and Show screens, many keys are available as shortcuts.
On all screens there are letter keys defined for each Checkbox, Button, Option button as well as keys defined to move to a textbox or list. The letter key for each control is either underlined or enclosed in brackets e.g. [a].
C. Misc
If the option "Change Continuously ..." is checked, the sections will be resized as the the separation bar between two sections is dragged. If the option is not checked, the sections will only be resized when the mouse button is released to drop the bar at a new position.
E.g. If the bar between Directory Tree and FileList sections is dragged and Change continuously is checked, you will see how many columns in filelist are still displayed and how much of the directory names can be read as the mouse is moved.
Some sizes do not work correctly for directory tree due to a windows problem. In K-free you can only select fonts and sizes for the Directory tree section that have been tested and work correctly.
However for other sections any installed font is allowed.
If you press Ctrl+F to change fonts for all sections but select a font/size that is not allowed for the directory tree, the font/size for the directory tree will either keep it's existing font or use the next larger available font/size automatically.
To receive a warning message when this happens UNcheck option "Do not show warning when use Ctrl+F ...".
D. Initialise Keys / Include Extra Single Keys for K-free
Press the button to Initialise keys to reload all key definitions and change the option to include extra single keys for K-free.
When the option to include extra single keys for K-free is selected the the following keysets will be defined in addition to the standard keys that are also available.
The extra keys allow a single key instead of the combination of Alt/Ctrl/Shift plus a letter or number key that is defined always for that function. E.g. Y will cycle through FileList windows as well as Ctrl+Y
Extra single keys are defined separately in this way to allow for future versions of K-free where the corresponding standard key will be required on a screen where you may also wish to type text. E.g. If the File List window includes a section in which text can be typed, you will no longer want Y to cycle to the next filelist window when it is typed as part of that text. It is therefore advised to become accustomed to the standard shortcut keys.
The extra keys that will be defined in addition to the standard keys are:
Define file List. A,M,S (Change option as for Ctrl+A,M,S AND refresh file list)
Select parameters for the list / Options. 3,4,5,0 (same functions as Ctrl+3,4,5,0)
Up/Down U.W (same functions as Ctrl+Shift+U,W)
Cycle/tile/fill Y,H,N (same functions as Ctrl+Y,H,N)
Find and Action J,K (same functions as Ctrl+J,K)

Options: AutoFavourites
Autofavourites is a feature / part of K-free which will allow quick access to your most commonly used files and directories.
K-free automatically keeps a record of your most used files and displays them with the most often used first.
In your version this feature is not available.
This could be because the feature has not yet been released, because you have an old version or because you registered a version of K-free that does not include Autofavourites.
K-free can however keep a record of which files and directories are used so that when the feature is available or if you decide to buy it, your favourites list will already exist.
Check the option "Save Uses ..." to keep a record of which files and directories are used.
