To show where space is used on a drive or directory with many subdirectories:

1. Select the directory or drive for which you want to see the space distribution.
2. Choose Distribution space by subdir from the file menu.
3. Check results and if you need an analysis of a subdirectory, double-click that subdirectory.

1. Select the directory or drive for which you want to see the space distribution.

The directory to be used will be from the first selected item in The Current Section:
. directory tree - the directory or drive selected will be used.
. file list - the first item selected in blue and marked with * will be used to determine the directory to be analysed. If nothing is selected in blue, the first item selected in green will be used. NB The first item selected must be a directory.
. the text section - no directory is selected. First change The Current Section and select a directory.

The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.

2. Choose Distribution space by subdir from the file menu.

If you have selected a drive or any directory containing many files, this can take some time.

Each Top Level directory will be shown as it is analysed in the List of results if Show List of results in Status Bar (Windows menu) is checked.

Press stop button on status bar (if shown) or Esc key to Interrupt the analysis. After user stops analysis, no results will be shown.

3. Check results and if you need an analysis of a subdirectory, double-click that subdirectory.

The List displayed shows a line for each subdirectory of the main directory selected for analysis. The total number of files and byte count of the biggest file are shown for each subdirectory.

Bytes is the sum of the byte counts of all files in the subdirectory.
Used is the total amount of space used by that subdirectory.

If you delete or move a subdirectory to a different disk, the amount of space that will become available on the drive is shown as bytes used. NB space will not become free if you delete files but keep a recycled copy.

The first directory listed is always the directory selected for analysis and the total number of files in that directory (not in any subdirectory) is shown as well as the sum of byte counts and total space used by these files.

To show the space analysis for any subdirectory. Double-click the line for the subdirectory or use up/down keys to select the subdirectory and press "Analyse ...". Press OK or Esc key to hide analysis screen. If you analysed a subdirectory, you will return to the analysis for the main directory and can select another subdirectory for analysis.

All space usage amounts are Bytes.

Note that space used for a file will usually be more than the total number of bytes in that file. This is because space on any disk is allocated to files as a fixed number of blocks.
Size of blocks is usually much more than 1 byte. For example if the blocksize is 16Kbytes (16384 bytes), then a file of 10 bytes will use 16kBytes on the disk and a file of 15000 bytes will also use 16kBytes on the disk. The actual blocksize varies between different disks.
